Metairie, Louisiana, is an unincorporated marvel sitting snug in Jefferson Parish, just west of the Crescent City. It’s technically a census‑designated place, but with over 143,500 residents as of 2020, it’s our fourth‑largest “city” by population if we bother to pretend it’s incorporated.
Rooted in history, French settlers first homesteaded here in the 1720s on what’s now Metairie Ridge—a natural levee carved by an ancient Mississippi channel. Local Native Americans used it as a road; now we call it Metairie Road, spitting distance from Old Metairie’s 1920s-era charm.
These days, Metairie is a patchwork of upscale suburbs, shops, and office towers. The Galleria skyscraper—completed in 1986—is the parish’s second-tallest building and houses major TV studios, among others.
